Lot Essay

Similar in technique to a selfportrait by the artist in the British Museum, W. Bernt, Die Niederländischen Maler und Zeichner des 17. Jahrhunderts, Munich, 1979, IV, no. 195. A signed picture by Adriaen van de Velde, dated 1655, with J. Mitchell & Son, London in 1964, shows the same figure with slight differences in the details, suggesting that Du Jardin and Van de Velde may have used the same model or alternatively one artist copied the other. Another version of the picture was in the Major von Bresler Collection, Danzig in 1909 (reproductions at the Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie, The Hague)
