Lot Essay

Born in Augsburg, Mayr moved to the Low Countries where he is supposed to have studied with Rembrandt and Jordaens. He travelled to England and Italy, but was back in Augsburg in the 1660s and was appointed one of the Directors of the City Art Academy in 1684. The present drawing which recalls German 16th Century prototypes, presumably dates before Mayr's sojourn in the Low Countries
