HESSE, Hermann (1977-1962). Autograph manuscript signed, of his sequence of poems 'Sommer 1933', n.p., November 1933, a fair copy of 13 poems, ILLUSTRATED BY HESSE WITH A DECORATED TITLE PAGE AND 9 WATERCOLOURS (approximately 60 x 95mm - 105 x 95mm), with an autograph inscription signed to Josef Englert, 'Diese Gedichte, zwischen Ende Juni und Ende August 1933 entstanden, wurden für einige Freunde in dieser Form abgeschrieben. Dieses Exemplar schrieb ich im Auftrag von Herrn Josef Englert in St. Moritz', on 12 bifolia, folio. Provenance. Josef Englert; and by descent.
The format is typical of Hesse's calligraphic productions: the first page of the bifolium is decorated with a watercolour illustrative of the poem, which is transcribed on the third page. The scenes are apparently chiefly of Hesse's garden at the Casa Bodmer, and of the surrounding countryside of southern Switzerland. The sequence of poems is: 'Blumen nach einem Unwetter', 'Häuser am Abend', 'Heisser Mittag', 'Hundstage', 'Nächtlicher Regen', 'Höhe des Sommers', 'Augenblick vor dem Gewitter', 'Alter Park', 'Rückgedenken', 'Schmetterlinge im Spätsommer', 'Scheingewitter', 'Sommer ward alt ...' and 'Welkes Blatt'.
