A Gray Schist Relief depicting the Attack of Mara
Gandhara, 2nd/3rd Century
Well carved with Buddha grasping the arms of Mara armed with a sword, surrounded by his host of demon warriors and an elephant flanking Buddha's head
21¼ in. (54 cm.) high

Specialist note

In his vain attempt to dislodge Siddhartha, Mara used warriors and an army of demons. The present example of this scene is particulary evocative with the powerful gesture of the unarmed Buddha holding back the warrior.
