Lot Essay

Cardinal Henry Aviz ruled from 27 July 1578 until his death on 31 January 1580. The son of Manuel I King of Portugal, Henry was educated for the priesthood and was made a Cardinal in 1545. He acted as Regent for King Sebastian, and succeeded the throne when Sebastian was killed at the Battle of the Three Kings in Morocco. King Henry left no heir, and the Aviz dynasty ended with him.
