Lot Essay

Jardinières of this form were exhibited at the Paris Exposition Universelle of 1867 and at the Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition of 1876 by A.B. Daniell & Son. As very few of these elaborate large works were made, it is possible that the present lot is one of those examples.
See Prof. Walter Smith, The Masterpieces of the Centennial International Exhibition, Vol II, Philadelphia, 1876, p. 159, (and reproduced above), and The Art Journal Catalogue of the Paris Exposition Universelle of 1867, London, 1867, p. 87.
