Lot Essay

YoYo Lander’s works prove to inhabit a distinct contrast in shade and color. She achieves this by painting in watercolors and collaging her own works together – repurposing them into fragile portraits of identity. The vulnerability is palpable, but strength overrides any trepidation one might find within her works. YoYo finds beauty in the unexpected nature of watercolors, and the fact that they perfectly mimic the unpredictable and distinctive human body. The dimension and texture achieved through her watercolor and collage technique adds layers of additional sentiment. It makes you look at her works and see some part of yourself. We all share common feelings, from joy and love to shame and even fear. YoYo Lander reminds us of the commonality in these emotions, especially now, and that sometimes it might just be ok to not be ok.

Lander’s work explores the essence of people of color. Her passion is to use body language as an introduction into the context. Choosing her subjects are very intuitive. She goes with what she feels. YoYo then takes several photographs of her subjects to capture an image that is definitive. Next, she combines several images to express the chosen image through watercolors and cut watercolor paper. Within the final piece one will find a sense of truth, perhaps a moment that you’ve seen or experienced.
YoYo's aesthetic is visceral and expressive. What begins with a strictly defined intent, composition and color scheme is rarely visible in the finished piece. Layers of cut and dyed watercolor paper are strategically places over rough sketches.
In 2018 YoYo began to thing about ideas surrounding vulnerability and what it means for people of color, particularly, black women. She decided to name it “Time Off. ” Her current series, “Bruised Bananas are Sweeter,” tackles the same idea, but for black men.
These series marked a shift in Yoyo Lander's artistic approach, in which the context now plays a significant role in the depiction of the individual(s).
