Chinese Export Silversmiths: An Introduction

by Jennifer Pitman, Specialist Head of Department, Silver

Chinese export silver was produced from the mid-18th to mid-20th century, and was originally made for Western clientele. It falls largely into three periods: early-, late- and post-China trade. Chinese silver for the Western market is identified by its silver marks, which typically refer to retail silver firms.
