The larger recumbent beast carved in the round holding a flowering lily branch between its clenched teeth, his large head finely detailed with bulbous eyes below prominent eyebrows, the young cub by its side similarly portrayed grasping the other end of the branch, the stone of an opaque creamy beige-white tone with darker inclusions

Lot Essay

The combination of a large lion, dashi and a small lion xiaoshi forms the rebus taishi shaoshi meaning 'may you and your descendant achieve high rank' making this a popular subject for small jade carvings intended for the scholar's desk in the late Ming and early Qing dynasties.
