QING DYNASTY, 18/19TH CENTURY

The even white material finely carved in low relief with a shaped cartouche enclosing a monkey riding on the back of a horse holding a large fruiting peach tree branch, below a pair of confronted archaistic dragons repeated on the reverse above a lengthy inscription, followed by the signature, Zigang, pierced for suspension
2 1/2 in. (6.3 cm.) diam.

Lot Essay

The subject of this carving is a rebus for the phrase mashang fenghou, meaning "may you immediately be elevated to the rank of marquis", a wish that an official may rise rapidly in rank.
