The complex geometric decoration on these small jars was inspired by Yongle-period porcelains, the forms and decoration of which reflect strong Middle Eastern influence. Very similar geometric decoration can be seen on a blue and white cylindrical jar and cover and a moon flask, both of Yongle date, illustrated in Gugong Bowuyuan Cang Ming Chu Qinghuaci (Early Ming Blue and White Ceramics in the Palace Museum Collection), vol. 1, Beijing, 2002, nos. 22 and 36, respectively. A Yongzheng-marked jar very similar to the current pair is illustrated ibid., vol. 2, no. 193.
