Meikeisai Hojitsu was a direct retainer of the Tokugawa shogunate and was also patronised by the daimyo of Hirosaki in Mutsu province. Considered to be the finest carver in Edo (modern day Tokyo) of his time, his subjects included real and mythical animals and human figures and he carved in both wood and ivory.
