Nicolas Lancret (1690-1743)

The facial types and general disposition of the figures in a landscape identify this as a work from the middle period of Lancret's career, dating from the late 1720s or early 1730s. We are grateful to Dr. Mary Taverner Holmes for confirming the attribution of the painting to Lancret on the basis of photographs.
