This and the following lot are evidently inspired by landscapes by Philips Koninck; a comparable gouache of a Rhenish landscape is in the Rijksprentenkabinet, Amsterdam, M. Schapelhouman, P. Schatborn, Land & Water: Dutch Drawings from the 17th Century, Amsterdam, 1987, pp.98-9.
As mentioned by Schapelhouman and Schatborn, it is certain that the two artists knew each other, for in 1668 Battem was commissioned by Koninck to have the prints, drawings and art books from Abraham Furnerius' estate auctioned. Furnerius was Koninck's brother-in-law and also Battem's master
