HOBUN, Kikuchi (1862-1918). Hobun gafu [Pictures by Hobun]. 1905.
8° (241 x 157mm). Title with coloured woodcut of a spray of cherry blossom, 37 coloured wood-block plates on 50 pages (including 13 'diptych' plates). stitched within limp blue paper-covered boards, printed paper title label on upper cover, modern blue cloth box.
A fine natural history album from one of Kyoto's leading painters. The birds, fish, insects and animals are all shown in naturalistic settings with as much attention paid to the plants that surround them as to the subjects themselves. Thirty of the plates are of birds, two of fish, three of insects, and there is a single plate of deer and, as the final image, a mouse.
