A FRENCH SILVER-GILT CUP AND SAUCER
MARK OF JEAN-BAPTISTE-CLAUDE ODIOT, PARIS, CIRCA 1806, BASED ON A DRAWING BY ANTOINE-LÉONARD DUPASQUIER
The cup of bell form, on circular foot cast with stiff leafage, the lower body engraved with a matching stiff leaf border, the upper body engraved with a border of running grapevine, the scrolled handle centered by paterae, the circular saucer engraved with matching stiff leafage and running leaf and berry border, the cup and saucer later engraved with Imperial crown above initial N, marked under foot of cup and saucer
The cup 4½ in. (11.4 cm.) high; 15 oz. 10 dwt. (497 gr.)

专家说明

This cup and saucer closely follows a design by the sculptor Antoine-Léonard Dupasquier. The engraved initial N is not contemporary with the piece. A more elaborate N and engraved coat-of-arms are found on a teapot, tea caddy, and cup, all by Biennais and known to have been looted from Napoleon's carriage by Prussian troops following his defeat at Waterloo in 1815. It is possible that pieces of silver given by Napoleon as official gifts were later engraved by the recipients, and that this cup is an example of such commemorative engraving.
