SAINT NICHOLAS WITH SCENES FROM HIS LIFE
RUSSIAN, LATE 18TH CENTURY
The central scene shows St. Nicholas, standing, raising a sword with his right hand and holding a model of a church in his left hand. He is flanked by Christ and his Mother, who presents him with the bishop's omophorion. The central image is surrounded by twelve episodes from the Saint's life. Six family saints appear on the borders. The vibrant colours of the painting become brighter by the gold backgrounds.
