Pierre Jules Mene (French, 1810-1879)

The most popular of Mêne's racing studies, Vainqueur du Derby is thought to represent the 1862 Derby Winner Caractacus. The wax model was exhibited at the Salon in 1863, with a bronze version following a year later. Listed as number 16 in the sculptor's catalogue under the simple title Jockey à cheval, the model was edited in two sizes, the present cast being an example of the larger version.

Another example sold these rooms, 8 December 2005, lot 71 ($20,400).
