Da saß der alte, neun und neunzigjährige
Poet Philemon, mächtiger Dichter Ueberrest,
In dürftiger Wohnung saß er da gedankenvoll,
Er, der Athen's glorreichsten Tagen beigewohnt,
Der auch gehört einst Demosthen's Philippika
Und oft den Preis errungen durch anmutige
Weisheitserfüllte, die er schrieb, Comödien'.
First published with the title 'Philemon's Tod' in the Deutsche Musenalmanach of 1834.
