Mid-18th century, and re-railed
The rectangular back and seat upholstered in later petit-point needlework depicting an urn issuing flowers with birds and a squirrel, the downswept arms above truss-scrolled columnar legs embellished with acanthus-festooned 'venus' shells and terminating in ring-bound 'Jupiter' eagle claws
73½ in. (187 cm.) wide

专家说明

The sofa, with its truss-scrolled columnar legs embellished with acanthus-festooned 'Venus' shells and terminating in ring-bound 'Jupiter' eagle claws, relates to a celebrated suite executed in 1735 by William Hallett for the London mansion of Arthur, 6th Viscount Irwin (d.1736) and sold in 1922 from Temple Newsam, Yorkshire. (see C. Gilbert, Newly discovered Furniture by William Hallett, Connoisseur, December 1964.)
