STATUE DE DAMO EN PORCELAINE DEHUA
CHINE, DYNASTIE QING, XVIIIEME-XIXEME SIECLE
The finely modelled figure is shown seated wearing a voluminous monastic robe that falls in graceful folds around the body, with his clasped hands hidden within the long sleeves. The face is realistically carved with downcast eyes and a contemplative expression, enhanced by the curly eyebrows, moustache and goatee beard. A double-gourd-shaped seal, He Chaozong, is impressed on the back.
8½ in. (21.5 cm.) high, wood stand

From the collection of Madame Hervé de Meester de Betzenbroeck, Brussels, and thence by descent within the family.

专家说明

This figure represents the popular monk known as Damo in China, Daruma in Japan and Bodhidharma in India, whose teachings eventually became the foundation of Chan (Zen) Buddhism. Compare to a similar example made by Chen shixin, sold in Christie's New York, 20 March 2014, lot 1628.
