The exceptional translucency of the nearly flawless stone of the present bowls has been enhanced by the refined form and the lack of surface decoration, resulting in a fine and understated elegance. These bowls follow the classic shape of their porcelain counterparts, which was an ideal form that complemented the purity of the white jade.

A pair of white jade bowls of similar shape and size, dated to the18th century, is illustrated by J. Rawson in Chinese Jade from the Neolithic to the Qing, British Museum, London, 1995, p. 400, no. 29:13. See, also, the pair sold at Sotheby's London, 14 May 2014, lot 23.
