Henry Brooks Adams, Washington, D.C., by whom acquired directly from the artist via the intermediation of Elizabeth Sherman Cameron, Washington, D.C. & Paris, in December 1900.
(probably) A gift from the above to Elizabeth Sherman Cameron or to her daughter Martha Cameron Lindsay.
Sir Ronald Charles Lindsay, Stepleton House, Iwerne Stepleton, Dorset, by descent from his wife Martha Cameron Lindsay in 1918.
David Alexander Robert Lindsay, 28th Earl of Crawford & 11th Earl of Balcarres, by descent from the above in 1945, and thence by descent to the present owners.
