Prints and Multiples

New York, London and Online | Year-in-Review

The 2021 sale season marked an exceptional year globally for Christie’s Prints and Multiples Department, firmly out-performing the competition to establish Christie’s as the international market leader.

From March to November, the New York live and online auctions totalled more than $33.8 million with all sales selling over 85% by lot and six resulting in white-glove auctions. Multiple world auction records were set and named collections such as The Collection of Lois B. Torf showed significant impact with many lots selling far beyond their estimates. Highlights included Pablo Picasso’s Séries 347 that nearly doubled its low estimate to set a world auction record for the series; from The Collection of Lois B. Torf, Cy Twombly’s Untitled I sold for US$437,000 which set a world auction record; and Keith Haring’s Growing that more than doubled its high estimate to set a world auction record for the series.

The Prints and Multiples Department in London paralleled the pace of the results with £17.3 million total for the year and the Old Master Prints sale in December realising its highest total ever. The two online auctions Banksy: I can’t believe you morons actually buy this sh*t sold sold on average 90% by lot and offered some of the artist’s best-known and coveted screen prints. His NOLA (Yellow Rain) surpassed its high estimate to set a world auction price for the subject. Other notables included Andy Warhol’s Queen Elizabeth II that more than doubled its low estimate and the complete set of Truck by Andy Warhol sold for a world auction record price for the set, achieving £162,500.
