Senior Specialist, Books, Maps & Manuscripts
In 2017, Julian celebrates his 20th anniversary in the antiquarian book world, after nigh on a decade in Christie's Books & Manuscripts department.
As a Christie’s Specialist, Julian was greatly involved in cataloguing the Foljambe Collection of natural history books (April 2008) as well as many other fine natural history, science and travel books, including maps and atlases. In these fields, Julian has brought to market a pair of John Russell’s extremely rare prints of the moon (£125,000, December 2016), and the offprint of Johann Gregor Mendel’s Versuche über Pflanzen-Hybriden (£242,500, July 2016).
He has also enjoyed being involved with non-book lots, such as the Apple-1 computer which sold for £133,250 (November 2010) and the Enigma machine which fetched £67,250 in the same sale -- both of which set new world records, and established new markets for these objects.
Over the past two years, Julian has grown and developed extremely successful sales of photographs, maps, posters and other ephemera relating to major 20th-century geo-political events. This ties into his life-long interest with TE Lawrence.
Julian also has a fascination with paleontology, geology and the earth sciences, and is presently helping to compile a new bibliography on the subject.
