Post-War and Contemporary Art
Our flagship 20th/21st Century Art auctions spotlight seminal modern and contemporary works. Auctions in London, New York, Paris and Hong Kong highlight iconic artists from 1945 to 1970, such as Mark Rothko, Andy Warhol, Francis Bacon and Louise Bourgeois, along with contemporary stars like Jean-Michel Basquiat, Yayoi Kusama, Gerhard Richter and Cecily Brown.
Continuously setting new auction records, in 2022 Christie’s sold Andy Warhol’s Shot Sage Blue Marilyn for US$195 million, making it the most expensive work of 20th-century art ever to sell at auction.
In 2021, Christie’s was the first international auction house to sell an NFT of a purely digital work of art, setting the stage for this dynamic and innovative new collecting category.
Beyond auctions, Christie’s hosts selling exhibitions and private sales featuring paintings, drawings, photographs and installations. Our global team of specialists is available for complimentary and confidential valuations of individual works or entire collections, offering an unparalleled service for buying or selling at auction, online or through bespoke private sales.

Rotter is recognized as a leading authority in Contemporary art and has become known for his innovative strategies for driving business and his astute understanding of the rapidly evolving international art market.

His Christie’s career highlights include the 2017 sale of Leonardo da Vinci’s Salvator Mundi, which sold for $450 million, becoming the most expensive object ever sold at auction, Jeff Koons’ Rabbit from the Collection of S.I. In 2020, Rotter’s keen market intelligence and creativity were integral to the implementation of the first-of-its-kind global relay auction, live-streamed from Christie’s salerooms in Hong Kong, Paris, London, and New York.
