Featuring The Sale of the Century
-
Event date 18 - 25 April -
Event location New York
This spring, Prints and Multiples started the season with strong results of US$9,703,953 across our global auction series. The Contemporary Edition auctions featured Banksy’s NOLA (Green Rain), which achieved £151,200 in the London edition, and David Hockney’s Walking Past Two Chairs, from Moving Focus, which sold for £88,200 in New York. The Prints and Multiples online auction followed with a total of £4,518,108 and sold 92% by lot. Coinciding with the commemoration of Pablo Picasso’s legacy on the 50th anniversary of his death, the artist’s prints saw more remarkable figures, including Buste de femme d’après Cranach le Jeune selling for £567,000.
The season continues at Christie’s New York with The Sale of the Century: An Important Corporate Collection of Prints and Multiples. This single-owner collection comprises over 400 lots of 20th century editions presented in one live auction and an online sale. On 18 April, the evening sale spotlights an unprecedented selection of complete portfolios, including an exceptionally rare example of Barnett Newman’s Cantos, David Hockney’s A Rake’s Progress and Andy Warhol’s Flowers. Additional highlights include Henri Matisse’s Jazz, El Lissitzky’s Victory Over the Sun and more modern works. Carefully assembled over decades and presenting many works for the first time in years, the collection is one of the most important selections of Prints and Multiples to ever be auctioned.
The offerings conclude with the seasonal Prints and Multiples auction on 20 April. The live auction features a rare unique trial proof set of Keith Haring’s Growing portfolio acquired directly from the artist, an impression of Richard Diebenkorn’s Green and a selection of unique Andy Warhol trial proofs.
