inscribed 'Lady Elizabeth Harcourt (née Bingham)/1840. Copied by George Hayter, from the original portrait/commenced by Sir Thomas Lawrence 1824 but which Lady Elizabeth Harcourt/sat nine times to Mr Hayter for its completion 1832.' (on the reverse)

專家說明

Lady Elizabeth Bingham was the eldest daughter of the 2nd Earl of Lucan. She married in 1815 George Granville Vernon (son of the Hon. Edward Vernon Harcourt) who assumed the name Harcourt in 1830.
The original portrait referred to in the inscription is presumably Lawrence's portrait of the sitter, no. 383 in Kenneth Garlick's 'Sir Thomas Lawrence' 1989. The Lawrence portrait is described as '2/3 finished' in the list compiled by Lawrence's executor.
