the complete set of six etchings, 1875-77, on Japon, with justification, from the deluxe edition of 60, published by Fritz Gurlitt, Berlin, 1895, each plate signed in pencil, with margins, mounted on card, in very good condition, loose (as issued) within original portfolio with printed title in black, with a few scuffs, otherwise the portfolio in good condition; together with five other etchings by the same hand (B. 2, 5, 11, 13, 14), on Japon, each signed in pencil, published by Fritz Gurlitt, Berlin, 1900, with margins

專家說明

Willhelm Leibl played an important role in the revival of interest in printmaking in late 19th century Germany. Along with his contemporary Adloph von Menzel, Leibl was a painter who turned his attention briefly to printmaking; between 1873 and 1877, he produced nineteen etchings. Although his output was not large, Leibl helped to pave the way for artists such as Max Liebermann and Max Klinger who would explore the medium more deeply.
