A CHIPPENDALE BLUE-PAINTED PINE CORNER CUPBOARD

This rare, architecturally inspired cupboard is closely related to a group of cupboards from the eastern shore of Virginia. Most notably, a cupboard in the collection of Colonial Williamsburg shares the complex top molding, highly developed pilasters, paneled lower doors and stepped bracket feet of this example (see Hurst and Prown, Southern Furniture 1680-1830 (Williamsburg, Virginia 1997) cat. no. 152). The cupboard offered here has the further distinction of a canted, or "turkey breast" facade.
