WILLIAM BRYANS
Antiquities of Cheshire, in Photograph, with short descriptive notes: to which are added views of several Ancient Buildings in Shropshire and North Wales. Chester and London: Hugh Roberts, J.H. and J. Parker, and Whittaker and Co., 1858. 2° (370 x 278mm). 25 mounted albumen prints. (Light scattered spotting mostly on mounts.) Recent maroon half leather preserving the original green bubble-grain cloth, front cover lettered in gilt (covers soiled).
FIRST EDITION, RARE. APPARENTLY NOT IN THE BRITISH LIBRARY. ABPC records no copy selling at auction in over 30 years. Bryans undertook to preserve many fine architectural examples which were disappearing at the time of publication, due to wear or the 'improvements' of modern restoration. The photographs include views of halls (Poole, Lower Huxley, Crewe, Dorfold), castles (Conway, Rhuddlan, Caenarvon), abbeys (Haughmond, Buildwas), and historic streets. Gernsheim Incunabula 83.
