JAMMES, Francis (1868-1938). Seven autograph letters signed to 'Mon cher ami' or 'Mon fraternel ami' ('François', an editor or publisher), Orthès [Béarn], 1901 and 1915-1919, 11 pages, folio and 8vo.

Letters evidently to a close friend, writing of his spiritual beliefs -- 'Cette relation formidable avec l'Absolu qui commence là où nous finissons' -- recalling his love of nature ('un mirage de la solitude -- je me suis fait presque sauvage à la poursuite des bécasses dans les bois. Je suis revenu à vingt ans, mais cette fois, avec Dieu'); sending sympathy and spiritual comfort on a death; mentioning his wife, Ginette, and giving repeated assurances of friendship; referring to verses for publication in l'Ermitage (one of the four chief Symbolist organs), and to his writing for other publications.

Jammes, a friend of Paul Claudel, Darius Milhaud, Marcel Schwob and other poets and writers, was influenced by Claudel to become increasingly devout. His Catholicism was expressed in his poetry. (7)
