Originally named Olga and built for a Hamburg owner by G. Howaldt at Kiel in 1883, the iron screw steamer Amélie assumed her new name when she was acquired by Adolf Depp of Antwerp in 1890. Registered at 1,114 tons gross (714 net), she measured 226 feet in length with a 33 foot beam and was engined by Mdrkische of Berlin. Although undated, it is probable that this portrait of her was commissioned to mark her maiden departure from Antwerp under her new Depp colours.
