William Anderson is best known as a marine painter but was a more diverse artist than that, as is demonstrated by these Lake District watercolours. Rosthwaite is south of Derwentwater, in Borrowdale. No site by name of Ashside is noted on modern maps in the region of Derwentwater and Borrowdale, but the place depicted by Anderson may be Ashness.
