Chikuhosai was the eldest brother of Tanabe Chikuunsai I (1877-1937), one of the most important bamboo artists working in the first half of the 20th century in Osaka Prefecture.

In the late 19th century, Chinese style bamboo baskets became very popular in Japan due to the rising popularity of sencha 煎茶 tea ceremony. Bamboo artists in Osaka area became particularly well known for their skill in making intricate baskets inspired by Chinese classical styles.
