專家說明

Fashioned from exceptionally pure Khotan jade from Central Asia, this censer is notable for its lustrous, even tone and finely finished surface, enhanced by delicate low-relief carving.

Of all Qing rulers, the Qianlong Emperor was perhaps the most devoted patron of jade carving. Dissatisfied with the quality of early court production, he demanded increasingly refined workmanship from imperial artisans. A major obstacle was the limited supply of suitable jade, a problem resolved only after the incorporation of Xinjiang into the Qing empire in the 1750s. Thereafter, regular tribute shipments of high-quality Khotan jade enabled the palace workshops to produce carvings of the exceptional standard sought by the emperor.

Beyond its aesthetic appeal, the censer reflects the enduring importance of incense in Chinese culture. Incense was used not only in religious and ritual contexts but also for perfuming garments and furnishings. From the Song dynasty onward, incense burners became essential appointments of the scholar’s studio, where their fragrance was believed to foster contemplation, refinement, and intellectual clarity.
