POE, Edgar Allan (1809-1849). Mesmerism "in articulo mortis." An Astounding & Horrifying Narrative, Shewing the Extraordinary Power of Mesmerism in arresting the Progress of Death. London: Short & Co., 1846.
8o. 16 pages. (Some pale spotting.) Modern blue morocco.
FIRST SEPARATE EDITION. An earlier, much milder attempt at this subject had appeared in Tales (1845) under the title "Mesmeric Revelation." The tale did not become the "incomparably revolting account of the too-long-delayed death of M. Valdemar" until it appeared in American Review of December 1845, published separately here for the first time (see Grolier American 55n). BAL 16151; Heartman & Canny, p. 111.
